Competitive Landscape · Set 2

Platform & Tooling Players

The SaaS + creator-economy landscape — the products you'd build on or buy instead of. These sell software to host a community and charge two-to-three figures a month for it. The question this set answers: how do we stack up as a product, and where do we structurally win?

⚠ Names real competitors + real prices on purpose. Scoped competitive intelligence, not a break in the brand-free rule. verified 2026-07 = confirmed against a cited source. reported / est. = figure is third-party computed or availability-uncertain, labelled as such. Sources listed in the footer.

01The matrix

Two pricing models here: subscription SaaS (Skool → Teachable) and revenue-share / fee-only with no monthly floor (Whop, Maven). Transaction fees are the platform's take on top of payment processing.

PlatformMonthly priceTransaction feeCommunity depthAI featuresCerts / coursesOwns your data? Our angle vs them
Skool $9 / $99 published
(Hobby / Pro; 2 tiers)
10% on Hobby; 2.9%+ on Pro (→3.9% >$900) Single feed; best-in-class gamification (points, levels, leaderboards); iOS/Android; weak on spaces/DMs None native — cited as the top reason builders leave for Circle/Mighty Basic multi-module courses; no quizzes, no certs, no cohorts Weakest — no custom domain, runs under skool.com; CSV export via API only (May 2026) The walled-garden opposite of us: no AI, no certs, no domain. We win on every axis that matters for a credential.
Circle $89–$419 published
(Pro / Business / Ent.; + custom)
2% → 0.5% by tier (+ processing) Strong, structured — Spaces, events, DMs, live streams, custom domain all tiers Aggressive — 2,500 AI credits/mo, AI writer; AI Agents + moderation gated to Enterprise Courses on all tiers; community-first, lighter on formal assessment Moderate — custom domain all tiers; export on Business+; white-label apps only on top tier The polished "community OS" and a real feature bar. But AI is an add-on to a community tool; ours is the substrate. And no native certification.
Mighty Networks $79–$354 published
(Launch → Growth; + Pro custom)
2% → 0.5% floor (never zero; + processing) Deepest — unlimited Spaces, chat + threads, DMs, cohorts, events, gamification, native app AI on all tiers — "AI Cohost," "People Magic" matching, "Make it Better" writer Strongest of the community-native trio — cohorts, quizzes, badges, certs, SCORM Good — custom domain all tiers, export all tiers, API on Scale+; white-label app on Pro The all-rounder that comes closest on courses + certs. We beat it on AI depth (agents as substrate, not assistant) and dedicated iron vs shared multi-tenant.
Kajabi $179–$499 published
(Basic → Pro; cheap tier pulled Jan 2026)
$0 on Kajabi Payments; else 5%→0.5% surcharge by tier Community is an afterthought — 1 community (Basic/Growth), up to 3 (Pro); lighter feed/spaces "Expert Agents" marked COMING SOON rolling out; AI media credits (transcribe/translate/dub) Strongest formal LMS — graded quizzes with pass-gating, auto certificates, cohorts, full marketing suite Good on portability — custom domain, remove-branding, API; marketing-suite lock-in is the real switching cost Best LMS + marketing suite, but community-thin and AI still shipping. We're AI-native from the core and community-first, not course-first.
Disco
closest comp
$399–$499 published
(Org; Enterprise custom)
None advertised (Stripe processing only) Deep — feeds, groups, channels, DMs, events, directory, leaderboards, cohorts Most aggressive AI-native — AI Agents (admin + member), AskAI, AI curriculum + quiz + video generation, AI moderation Full — cohorts + self-paced, quizzes, assignments, SCORM, certificates Partial — branded academy + custom domain; API/SSO Enterprise-gated; not self-hostable Our direct comp — and the one to beat. We match its AI and exceed it on: a real external credential, own-your-data on dedicated iron, and a premium-community (not just academy) layer.
Whop $0 / mo published
(no subscription; fee-only)
2.7%+$0.30 processing + 3% platform on gated sales (~5.7% effective computed) Broad, app-modular — pick Chat, Forums, Courses, Livestream, Onboarding per "whop" Light/emerging — "AI-assisted engagement," no agent/curriculum stack Has a Courses app but commerce-first; quizzes/certs limited Weak — SaaS-only, marketplace-locked, not self-hostable; strength is payouts + discovery Monetization infrastructure, not a learning platform. Right tool to charge for access fast; wrong tool for cohorts, certs, or AI curriculum — exactly our center.
Maven $0 / mo published
(rev-share; courses $500–$3k/cohort)
10% platform (instructor keeps 90%) + Stripe Cohort-scoped — channels, live sessions, projects, accountability; no persistent standalone community Light — hosts many AI courses, but minimal platform-native AI Strong on cohorts — live, practitioner-taught, project-based; issues certificates Weak — marketplace, not self-hostable, no white-label; Maven owns discovery/brand Best-in-class cohort delivery + audience reach, but you rent their marketplace. We own the record, the brand, and the AI; cohorts are one mode, not the whole product.
Discourse
own-your-data leader
$0 self-host / $20–$500 published
(open-source; hosted tiers)
N/A — no commerce/payments layer Deepest forum — categories, threaded topics, trust levels, chat; no cohorts/events-native Real + growing — hosted Pro includes 500k AI credits; AI search/summary/moderation None native — it's a forum, not an LMS Strongest in the set — 100% open-source (GPL), fully self-hostable, full export, no lock-in Anchors the own-your-data axis we're committing to — but it's a forum with no LMS, certs, or premium tiers. We take its data-sovereignty stance and add everything it lacks.
Teachable $39–$189 published
(Starter → Growth; free tier dropped 2026)
7.5% on Starter; 0% on Builder+ (+ processing) Moderate, added later — community on Growth+; weaker than Circle/Mighty Modest — AI course-creation on all plans; no agent/moderation stack Strong LMS core — self-paced courses, quizzes, completion certs (Starter+), affiliates Partial — custom domain on Builder+; SaaS-only, not self-hostable The safe, cheap self-paced-course pick — community + AI are catch-up features. We're the opposite build order: AI-native + community-first with a credential on top.

02The product-landscape read

No incumbent occupies our corner: AI-native + own-the-record + dedicated-iron + native certification, all at once. The platforms cluster into three camps — community-first (Skool, Circle, Mighty), course-first (Kajabi, Teachable, Maven), and commerce/forum (Whop, Discourse). The one player in our exact lane, Disco, matches us on AI but not on the external credential, data ownership, or dedicated topology. Everyone else is missing at least two of the four.

The four axes where we structurally beat all-in-one SaaS

The build-vs-buy note. This set doubles as our substrate map. These prices ($9–$500/mo) are what it costs to rent the commodity layer — and they're exactly why our ADRs land on own the source-of-truth & permission authority, rent the commodity, defer the sophistication. We are not trying to undercut Skool on price; we're building a product these tools structurally can't be, and pricing it (see Set 1) like the membership networks it actually competes with.

03Per-platform deep dive

Disco our closest comp

The purest AI-native play in the set and our direct comparable — it leads with "AI Agents" for admins and members plus an end-to-end AI curriculum/quiz/video-generation stack, and bundles a full LMS (cohorts, SCORM, certs) with deep community under one branded academy. Its weakness is price and lock-in: at $399–499/mo it's the most expensive entry here, API/SSO are Enterprise-gated, and there's no self-host or true data-portability story. Our read: match its AI; beat it on the external credential, data ownership on dedicated iron, and a premium-community layer beyond "academy."

Skool $9 / $99

Deliberately minimalist — "one feed + gamification" aimed at coaches/creators who want frictionless community + light courses. Strength is simplicity and best-in-class leaderboards; weaknesses are structural: no real LMS (no quizzes/certs), essentially no AI, no custom domain, and a punishing 10% fee on the $9 tier. Our read: the walled-garden opposite of what we're building — useful as the clearest example of what "cheap tool, not a membership" looks like.

Circle $89–$419

The polished, modern "community OS" — cleanest UX of the group, structured Spaces, and the deepest AI investment among community-native tools (agents, moderation, knowledge engine, but agents gated to Enterprise). Real cost creeps up via add-ons (Email Hub, AI credits, branded apps). Our read: a genuine feature bar for the community layer, but AI is an add-on to a tool where ours is the substrate, and it has no native certification.

Mighty Networks $79–$354

The "community + real LMS + branded app" all-rounder — out-features Circle on courses (cohorts, quizzes, certs, SCORM) and Skool on nearly everything, with AI baked into every tier ("AI Cohost," "People Magic" matching). Weaknesses: priciest standard tier, a fee that never hits zero, and AI-only support complaints. Our read: the closest on courses + certs; we win on AI depth (agents as substrate) and dedicated iron vs shared multi-tenant.

Kajabi $179–$499

The premium all-in-one course + marketing business platform — the most complete formal LMS (graded quizzes with pass-gating, certs, cohorts) bolted to a full funnel/email/checkout suite, now adding AI "Expert Agents" (rolling out). It prices like it: entry effectively $179/mo after killing the cheap tier. Community is an afterthought vs Circle/Mighty. Our read: best LMS + marketing, but course-first and community-thin — we're AI-native and community-first with a credential on top.

Whop $0/mo, fee-only

A monetization-first marketplace + modular community layer with zero monthly floor — you pay only when you sell (~3% platform + ~2.7% processing), the lowest-commitment entry for creators gating Discord/Telegram/app access. Shines at payments, discovery, and payouts; but it's commerce infrastructure with community bolted on, its Courses app is shallow, and its AI is thin. Our read: right tool to charge for access fast; wrong tool for cohorts, certs, or AI curriculum — precisely our center.

Maven $0/mo, rev-share

The default marketplace for serious, live, practitioner-taught cohort courses — no monthly fee, a clean 10% revenue share, strong built-in demand/discovery and credible certification. Community is deliberately cohort-scoped rather than persistent, and platform-native AI is minimal. Our read: best-in-class cohort delivery + reach, but you rent their marketplace; we own the record, brand, and AI, with cohorts as one mode among many.

Discourse own-your-data leader

The own-your-data anchor of this matrix — genuinely open-source and self-hostable at zero software cost, with full export, custom domains, and no lock-in, plus affordable hosted tiers ($20–$500/mo). Trade-off is scope: a best-in-class asynchronous forum, not a learning platform — no courses, cohorts, certificates, or commerce, and its AI is forum-augmentation. Our read: the model for our data-sovereignty stance; we take that stance and add the LMS, certification, and premium tiers it deliberately lacks.

Teachable $39–$189

The established self-paced-course LMS — solid course builder, quizzes, certificates, and a clean 0%-platform-fee path once on Builder+ (only the $39 Starter carries the punitive 7.5% take). Community and AI are catch-up features: community is a Growth-tier add-on and AI is limited to course-creation assistance. Our read: the safe, affordable solo-creator pick — the opposite build order to ours (course-first vs AI-native + community-first with a credential on top).
